TRAUMA AWARENESS AND SUPPORT
While there is limited data on the prevalence of trauma in Australia, 2 studies suggest that 57–75% of Australians will experience a potentially traumatic event at some point in their lives and 62–68% of young people will have been exposed to at least 1 traumatic event by the age of 17. Concerningly, 1 in 6 women have experienced violence by an intimate partner. Trauma among indigenous peoples and refugees has been estimated to be 2 to 3 times higher.
Within indigenous Australian and Torres Strait islander communities, vicious cycles of poor physical and mental health, addiction, incarceration, domestic violence, self-harm and suicide are directly linked to experiences of local, cultural and transgenerational trauma.
As of 2021, there are more than 100,000 refugees and asylum seekers living in Australia, many of whom carry high levels of trauma, PTSD and emotional scars from violence in the countries from which they have fled.
Our Planted for Purpose Trauma Healing and Reconciliation Course will be used to bring hope and restoration to vulnerable people in Australia.
